02Impact energy: how hard each one hits
Every injury difference between the three traces back to one variable: how much energy the projectile carries on impact. The gap is large.
- A paintball carries roughly 10 to 13 joules of impact energy, about ten times an airsoft BB, computed from field-legal velocity and projectile weight.11

03Paintball injury statistics
Paintball hits the hardest of the three, yet the emergency-department record shows serious injuries are rare, and heavily concentrated where eye protection matters most.
- There were 614 paintball-gun emergency-department visits in the US in 2008, just 3% of the 20,338 air-and-paintball gun ED visits that year.1

04Airsoft and BB-gun injury statistics
Airsoft carries far less energy than paintball, but it sits in the nonpowder-firearm category that national surveillance tracks, where eye injury is the one serious and rising risk. Note that the metal-projectile BB and pellet guns in this category hit harder than a plastic airsoft pellet, so these figures bound airsoft from above. - Nonpowder-firearm eye injuries rose about 50% over the study period, even as the overall injury rate fell.4

GellyBall is the lowest-energy of the three and the newest, which means the lowest severity but also the thinnest formal data. Read the figures with that caveat. 06How the three compare with other sports
Set against mainstream recreation, the projectile sports are not the outliers people assume.

The data points one direction. On all three, the serious injury is the eye injury, and it is almost entirely preventable.
